Sheridan’s final game in charge of Oldham was their 5-1 thrashing by Rotherham on September 23.
Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles during his glittering United career, does not have any managerial experience.
The 42-year-old has previously worked with the Red Devils’ Under-19 side and was part of their backroom staff after David Moyes’ sacking in April 2014 but has not taken charge of his own side.
The ex-England international, who has worked as a television pundit since retiring from his playing career in 2013, is a boyhood Oldham fan.
