There have been a few jokes making the rounds at Arsenal’s expense this season—not least after the midweek Capital One Cup exit against League Two Bradford City. Their poor form has attracted plenty of opprobrium internally as well, with a stormy shareholders’ meeting and growing criticism of Arsene Wenger by some fans.
A key reason for this is the simple truth that the North London club has been so obviously falling behind, both in terms of trophies collected and star players retained. And, while Cesc Fabregas went back to Barcelona in 2011, most of the better players leaving the Gunners have taken the road north to Manchester.
