I just read an article that impressed me thoroughly. It was about the central midfield/ deep lying playmaker position (keeping in mind the Span vs Italy match, which boasts the presence of two of the greatest midfielders of their generation, Xavi and Pirlo). I have always loved the position of the “deep lying playmaker” (DLP). It is one that requires lot of vision, ability and skill. Though strikers almost always hog the headlines and fame, these DLPs are the real architects and fulcrum of their teams.
In the modern game, where pace and power are more important over passing ability, etc, these players provide a breathe of fresh air, standing out. Probably the greatest “deep lying midfielder” would be current Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo.
